ALOPECIA AREATA MANAGEMENT

Treatment of patchy hair loss

ABOUT THE TREATMENT

Alopecia areata is common autoimmune disorder in which the immune system attacks the bulb of the hair follicle that results in unpredictable hair loss. In the majority of cases, hair falls out in small patches around the size of a quarter. It can range from a few patches on the head to more extreme case of complete loss of hair on the scalp (alopecia totalis). In extreme cases, there may be hair loss on the entire body (alopecia universalis).

The condition can affect anyone regardless of age and gender, though most cases occur before the age of 30. It may be because of genetic predisposition or due to conditions such as Hashimoto's thyroiditis or other thyroid disorders, pernicious anemia, or vitiligo.

TYPES OF TREATMENTS

Corticosteroids : The most common form of alopecia areata treatment is the use of corticosteroids, powerful anti-inflammatory drugs that can suppress the immune system. These are most commonly administered through local injections, topical ointment application, or orally.

Intralesional corticosteroids : These are steroid injections into the scalp. A dilute concentration of a steroid is injected into several areas of the patch of hair loss. This is typically repeated every 4 to 6 weeks until the area has resolved.

Platelet rich plasma therapy : It uses injections of a concentration of a patient’s own platelets to accelerate the healing. In this way, PRP injections use each individual patient's own healing system to improve musculoskeletal problems.

PRP injections are prepared by taking anywhere from one to a few tubes of your own blood and running it through a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets. These activated platelets are then injected directly into your injured or diseased body tissue. This releases growth factors that stimulate and increase the number of reparative cells your body produces.
