ECZEMA

Variety of treatments for Eczema

ABOUT THE TREATMENT

Eczema, is a common skin condition that causes red, scaly, often itchy rashes on the skin. Common places that are affected by eczema include the elbows, behind the knees, outer arms, and legs. Babies often have eczema, atopic dermatitis, on the cheeks and chin, whereas children and adults tend to have eczema on areas with skin folds such as the neck, wrist, ankles, inner elbow, and the back of the knee.

The rash can range in severity from mild to severe and differs from person to person. Eczema results in intense itch, which is often unbearable. Patients frequently will scratch to the point of injuring the skin, thereby leading to even more inflammation and itching.

TYPES OF TREATMENTS

Dr Eissan will build a treatment plan for your eczema that is right for you. Some of the available treatments are:

  • Self-care techniques, such as reducing scratching and avoiding triggers

  • Moisturizing Creams or Ointments – Such creams are known to keep your skin hydrated, and in many cases, repair the damaged skin.

  • Steroid Creams and Ointments - Prescription creams that contain a topical cortisone can help reduce inflammation. The steroid in these creams help relieve itching and redness by decreasing the inflammation in the skin. Steroids must be used cautiously with close observation

  • Non-steroid Prescription Creams – Many non-steroid creams are also available that can greatly reduce the inflammation by decreasing the immune system in the skin. They are great alternatives to steroids in treating areas of the skin that are thinner and more delicate.

  • Systemic Steroids - These are used in very severe cases as a short-term course to help reduce symptoms. However systemic steroids can go all through the body and may have side effects that are best avoided.

  • Biological Injections - These are usually used in used to treat moderate-to-severe eczema (atopic dermatitis) that cannot be controlled with topical medicines applied to the skin. Dupixent is used for eczema in adults and children at least 6 years old. They can be used with or without topical medications. Typically injected under the skin, usually once every 2 to 4 weeks.
